The facility promises a substantial economic uplift with IGC planning to occupy a two-level warehouse encompassing over 33,000 square meters. This expansive setup includes ample office space and parking, securing permission for round-the-clock operations. Councillor Peter Davies applauded the planning permissions, explicitly recognizing the pivotal role planning plays in catalysing employment and economic development within the region, stating, “This is why we have planning. It brings employment to the area, jobs.”
IGC’s repertoire includes an extensive range of more than 150 product lines, supplying renowned supermarkets with ready meals, soups, and sauces. Thus, the company has sought flexible use permissions to cater to its diverse production needs. Amidst discussions, it was highlighted that approximately 300 roles would transition from existing premises to the new hub, with about 200 fresh vacancies reserved for local hires.
Oldham Council’s unanimous approval on October 16 for the site’s operation as a food distribution centre, highlights a cautious approach as any further building modifications will necessitate separate applications. This meticulous procedure reflects the council’s commitment to balanced development, ensuring infrastructure aligns with community needs and expectations.
Despite overwhelmingly positive reception regarding job creation, there were concerns from a lone objector about the potential noise and odour disturbances, as the site is adjacent to Radclyffe School and residential areas. However, these concerns have not impeded the project’s momentum, aligning with regional growth objectives.
